As an East Coaster affected by Hurricane Sandy (yes, Delaware was very lucky compared to our neighbor New Jersey) the many relief efforts that are going across American touches close to home.

(Dewey Beach along the Delaware coastline received some of the worst flooding in Delaware as seen in this picture from CNBC)

There are tons of ways that you can help the millions of people effect by Sandy. You can volunteer your time or donate supplies such as food or money.

#1 The American Red Cross

The American Red Cross is the most obvious and probably one of the easiest ways to help those in need on the East Coast. When clicking on the website there is an easy to see Red Button which says “Donate Now”. After clicking that button, you can enter the amount you wish to donate and how often you would like to make the donation, one time or monthly. Pretty simple!

And if you don’t have a computer available? You can text REDCROSS TO 90999 and an automatic donation of $10 is given to the Red Cross.

#2 National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD)

This is an organization which is split by states. After clicking on the website you have many different options. You can donate money with the click of the Financial button or donate food by clicking on the Donate Goods button. And lastly if you would like to volunteer in any way possible, even if you are in the Mid-West or West Coast, you can click on the Volunteer button. All options will greatly help those in need. You can also check here and see who to contact to help volunteer, organized by your state.

#3 Give Blood

The main organization to give blood through is American Red Cross. Once you click on their website here you will see a blue button in the bottom left corner which says “search by zip code”. Once you’ve entered your zip code you will find places around you where you can give blood.

FEMA’s website is a nice one stop website for helping. It has links to all the websites mentioned above as well as several other, more specific places to help volunteer such as New York Cares and Jersey Cares.

#5 Research Other Ways

There are so many ways out there to help. The ways listed above are some of the easiest and well known ways for you to help. The Philanthropy Journal lists these above ways as well as what some well known companies such as AmeriCares, Capital One, and American Airlines are doing to help the efforts.

So please, if you feel the need to help the East Coast, please click on one of the links above and give what you can!

Lastly, did you check out the Hurricane Sandy telethon held on Friday November 2? It consisted of performances from Christina Aguilera, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, and Billy Joel along with actors Kevin Bacon, Tina Fey, Whoopi Goldberg and many more. It was a great success, earing $23 million. A great example of American pulling together!
